Became a composition teacher by accident

At the moment of writing this article, I am acting as a nanny to a primary school student… to be more correct, I should be her composition teacher! Entrusted by a friend, I would like to teach primary school students how to write essays?

I still remember that when I was in elementary school, I always had a lot of homework during the winter and summer vacations. One of this kid’s winter vacation assignments was to write about his experiences during his graduation trip. I communicated with her first and started a serious conversation: “Well, are you happy about your graduation trip this time? Is there anything that impressed you?”

The children started chatting, starting from preparing their luggage before departure. It is not difficult to imagine that sixth graders always have a lot of longing for this kind of outing. She also told me that she chatted with some sisters until late on the nights she attended the graduation trip…

I asked her where did Bi Lv go to play this time? Soon, I found that she began to talk about the big and small things at each stop, which felt a bit like a chronicle…

I had no choice but to interrupt her, “Well, uncle thinks your graduation trip was wonderful, but if you want to write an article about your experience of participating in the graduation trip, it’s best not to record it in such detail!”

Why can’t I write a running account?

I first told her what a “living account” is, and then analyzed with her why the composition cannot be written as a “living account”?

“Liu Shui Account”: Extended to a boring narrative or record without analysis and selection.

Firstly, the length of the article is limited, and it is impossible to completely record all the details of the travelogue; secondly, the attention of teachers and classmates is also very limited, so you should try to convey your own opinions within the limited space, or share the highlights and features of this graduation trip.

I felt like she didn’t quite understand. After some explanations and some examples, the children were finally able to understand what I meant. I also shared with her several ways to solve the topic of writing, such as getting straight to the point, opening with golden sentences, outlining situations, etc.

“Besides not being able to write a running account, you also have to think about the main point of this article first! Is it the friendship with your classmates? Or is it to share with everyone the scenic spots visited this time?” I saw her taking out two pieces of paper and about to start writing down her feelings and experiences on this graduation trip. I did not forget to remind her again.

Then, I also mentioned to her the “head-to-tail echo”. This means that the end of the article should echo the theme discussed at the beginning. Of course, just explaining is not enough. You must give examples to make it easy to understand.

Writing this, I wonder if you have discovered it? Whether it is primary school students writing essays, or adults often need to write product copywriting or social posts, the truth is actually the same - that is, we must first think about what is the main axis of the essay? Then, it can be developed into an article with a theme and content.

Three Writing Principles

This time I had the opportunity to teach primary school students to write essays, which also made me realize three principles of writing:

• Don’t just say Do and Don’t, but also analyze why?

• Just talking about the truth is not enough, it is best to give actual cases.

• Don’t just record the running accounts, think about the main axis of the narrative.

This afternoon, I hope to give the children some advice on writing. But for myself, I actually learned a lot. It’s not easy to be a composition teacher, but it seems that I have the ability in this area (laughs)!
