Today, in the learning community of “Seven-day Lightning Writing Camp”, a student asked me about “Collecting Inspiration” (https://www.contenthacker.today/2018/09/build-a-inspiration-database.html). It’s true that in the world of writing, we often strive for innovation and uniqueness. However, traditional logical thinking sometimes limits our creative development. At this time, [Lateral Thinking](https://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-tw/ Lateral Thinking) has become our secret weapon.
Now, let me explore with you how to improve your writing skills through lateral thinking.
First, let us understand what exactly is lateral thinking?
Lateral thinking is a concept proposed by Edward de Bono in his 1967 book “New Think: The Use of Lateral Thinking”. It refers to a method of breaking away from the traditional framework and thinking about problems from different angles and directions. In contrast to linear or vertical thinking (the process of seeking direct and logical solutions), lateral thinking encourages us to explore non-traditional solutions, inspiring creativity and innovation.
So, how can we improve [writing] through horizontal thinking (https://vitosdiary.com/podcast_post/s2ep60-Copywriting Expert|Zheng Weiquan-vista: Copywriting power is your ability)?
Break the rules: First, challenge your conventional wisdom about a particular topic. If you’re writing an article about love, try approaching it from an atypical perspective, such as having an AI try to express its desire for love.
Thinking by analogy: Using analogies to generate new ideas. For example, if you are writing an article about time management, you can compare time management to gardening and explore how to “plant” your time so that it can “flower and bear fruit.”
Random stimulus: Pick a word or object that seems unrelated to the topic of your writing and try to connect it to your topic. This unexpected combination can often inspire new ideas. For example, if you are writing a story about a lost memory, your random choice of the word “key” may trigger a fantasy journey about finding the lost key.
Challenge Assumptions: Question every assumption in your essay. If you’re writing about the pursuit of success, try exploring a hypothesis: “Does success really require hard work?” Doing so can lead you to develop a perspective that reflects contemporary shifts in values.
Create situations: Start your sentences with “if” to create new situations. For example, “How would our transportation system change if everyone on earth could fly?” This kind of scenario setting can help you jump out of the existing framework and explore new perspectives.
Next, I will share with you a practical case!
I have a friend named Alex who works as a marketing manager for a technology company. He told me that he hopes to enhance his professional image through writing and thereby establish a professional image and authority in the industry.
Although Alex’s daily work involves a lot of analysis and strategic planning, he also realizes that sharing his insights and experiences through writing can further enhance his professional image. However, the challenge Alex faced was that he found that he often fell into rigid thinking when writing, making it difficult to generate new ideas or bold creative expressions.
To overcome this problem, I told Alex that he could use lateral thinking techniques to expand his writing thinking. Here are some specific steps I suggested he take:
- Random association: Alex randomly selects an object from daily life - such as a coffee cup. He then tried to connect the coffee cup with the concept of marketing. This inspired him to write an article about “How to analyze market trends as carefully as tasting coffee.” In this article, he uses a novel way to discuss the importance and methods of market analysis.
- Reverse thinking: Faced with traditional marketing strategies, Alex asked himself: “How can we effectively achieve marketing goals if we completely abandon digital advertising?” This question made him rack his brains to think about other non-traditional marketing strategies, such as word-of-mouth marketing, partnerships, and community activities, which prompted him to write an article on creative marketing strategies.
- Situation change: In order to further broaden his horizons, Alex imagined that he was a marketing expert living in the future world. In that time and space full of uncertainty, technology and social structure have undergone tremendous changes. This change of situation and scene inspired him to think about how future marketing trends and technological innovation will shape consumer behavior, and he was finally able to write a forward-looking article that was both creative and ingenious and had potential business opportunities.
Through these lateral thinking exercises, Alex not only increased his confidence in creation, but also made his writing themes and styles richer and more layered. In addition, he was gradually able to demonstrate his professional abilities to the outside world, and slowly established a reputation in the industry. It is conceivable that the self-media he runs has begun to receive attention and praise from some industry insiders because of his unique perspective and profound insights.
From Alex’s case, it is not difficult to see that lateral thinking training can indeed help people break through the deadlock in writing, stimulate innovative thinking, and have the courage to express original expressions. By applying this way of thinking to the writing process, anyone can explore new content topics to increase the appeal and impact of their articles.
Finally, I would like to give you some tips:
- Daily practice: Choose a topic to write freely every day, and use 5 to 10 minutes to quickly record all the ideas or thoughts you can think of.
- Read more and see more: Reading extensively and observing deeply can expand your horizons, and at the same time enrich your inspiration database, which helps to think horizontally.
- Exchange and share: You are encouraged to participate in the Writing Community and exchange your ideas with other writers. Sometimes, an idea that comes from out of nowhere can spark amazing creative sparks.
Improving writing through lateral thinking is essentially an adventure in thinking. It requires us to have the courage to explore the unknown, challenge conventions, and then create unique excitement in the world of words. Remember, every attempt is a step towards becoming a better writer. Now, start your text adventure!
