Prudence and reflection on technology

For a person who once worked in the Internet industry and media circles and now makes a living as a consultant and corporate training, it seems to be an ordinary thing to be immersed in the atmosphere created by various technological forces every day. But I am not a supporter of “technological omnipotence”. Even if the revolutionary trend driven by cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, robots and the Internet of Things is so magnificent, I can skillfully apply certain skills, but I am not eager to enthusiastically praise or worship them.

Looking back on my own mentality change towards technological things, I find it is actually extremely subtle. For example, when I saw the previous debate between Musk and Zuckerberg on artificial intelligence (https://www.inc.com/kevin-j-ryan/mark-zuckerberg-disagrees-with-elon-musk-on-artificial-intelligence.html), I went from being confused and uneasy to feeling particularly interesting. As for whether technology can replace manpower, I can’t help but debate with myself from very different points of view. Until recently, I had the opportunity to read “Technology Choice: How to make good use of new technologies to enhance human beings instead of eliminating them?” 》This book has opened up a new horizon. There are so many strange things in this world, and many of them actually have no standard answers. In other words, the process of speculation is better than anything else.

The English version of this book has an interesting title, called “The Driver in the Driverless Car: How Our Technology Choices Will Create the Future”. It is indeed an interesting metaphor to use “the driver in a self-driving car” to describe the complex technological choices we face today.

In the process of continuous upgrading, humans will become another species.

The book mentioned that due to technological advancement, humans are forced to give up the driver’s seat, which not only reduces the fun of driving, but also gives up a lot of decision-making power to robots. This is not only a competition between human brains and technological power, but also has serious consequences such as unemployment, lack of cognitive and social adaptability, isolation, distress, and cognitive and emotional overload.

The two authors of this book Feiweike. Wardwa and Alex. Shakifer boldly raised one of the most important issues of this era, which is how to use technology to improve people’s lives instead of eliminating human beings. This also reminds everyone that how we choose technology now will determine people’s future - you know, technology can both benefit and harm mankind.

Three problems facing new technologies

Will you enthusiastically embrace new technology, or will you be afraid of being unable to control the impact and impact of technology? I observe the development of the world with caution and optimism, but I also do not forget to think about the nature of many problems in the process of exploring the future.

Just as the two authors suggest that when facing new technologies, you should ask yourself three questions in order to make better choices:

  • Fairness: Does technology benefit everyone equitably? *Risk: What are the benefits and risks of technology?
  • Autonomy: Does technology make people more autonomous or dependent?

Overall, “Technology Choice: How to make good use of new technologies to enhance human beings instead of eliminating them?” ” is an interesting read. The author is not alarmist, but presents information and remarks from different aspects together, just like Microsoft CEO Satya. Satya Nadella said, “This book provides a valuable guide and allows us to evaluate the pros and cons and risks of future technologies.”

The Japanese government has released an Intelligence and Communications White Paper, predicting that humans will enter the era of humanoid robots in 2030. Those science fiction plots that have happened in movies in the past may soon appear in front of you and me.

It is true that the future is not far ahead, but I want to know - are you ready?
