Four hours, Houlong folks made their own official website with their own hands

Today is Thursday, July 2nd. At eight o’clock in the morning, the weather was still humid from the seaside, and I was already standing in the classroom of Miaoli Houlong Digital Opportunity Center. This is a free information course from Houlong DOC 115. The course is called “Vibe Coding: Implementation of Local Characteristic Official Websites”. It lasts for four hours in total, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

Facing me were a group of out-and-out “zero-based” local students. When I checked in, I asked a few questions casually. Some people had never written a single line of programming in their lives, some had no idea how a website grew from scratch, and some elders laughed and snickered when they said they knew how to use LINE.

I totally get that look. It was a kind of politeness and distance that this thing should have nothing to do with me.

But four hours later, each of them walked out of that classroom with an official website that could actually go online, be passed on to family and friends, and be searchable. I want to write down exactly what happened this morning, because it overturned the most stubborn wall in the minds of too many people: making websites is a matter for engineers and has nothing to do with me.

You don’t have to be able to write programs, you just need to be able to speak

The protagonist that I will show you today is Google’s latest Antigravity. What’s really great about it is not that it has a flashy interface or full of functions, but that it directly removes the highest threshold.

In the past, when learning to make a website, you had to memorize a lot of grammar, memorize a lot of instructions, and understand a lot of abbreviations. 90% of people were dismissed before they even made anything. But in Antigravity, you don’t need that. You just need to talk about the website you want to make like you are chatting with someone: I want to make an introduction page for my peanuts, I want to sort out the one-day trip route to Houlong Cape of Good Hope, and I want to write a brand story for my grandma’s handmade soap. You are responsible for thinking about and describing the beauty of your hometown, and AI is responsible for turning it into a layout, text, and program, and turning it into a web page that can really be clicked, scrolled, and interacted with.

This is Vibe Coding, which I have been promoting for the past few years. It returns creation to everyone with a story, rather than leaving it only to a few people who can write programs.

In the first half, the students were still hesitant, with their fingers hanging on the keyboard and not daring to press. In the second half, the entire classroom turned into a lively creative scene: some people whispered to the AI to bargain for a color change, some people couldn’t help turning their heads to show the finished product to the people next to them, and some people worked harder to make the website that originally only wanted to be a one-page website more and more complete.

What really gave me goosebumps was the work they delivered.

I invite you to click in and see the results of four hours with your own eyes.

The following are not the adjectives I embellish afterwards, but the real works they said sentence by sentence this morning. I have attached the entire URL. If you click on it and have a look, you will understand how shocked I was at the scene.

Fourteen website works created by Houlong DOC students in one morning

Keep the history and culture of your hometown seriously

“Dust-covered Wing Shadow: Exploration of the Second World War Naval Special Attack Base in Houlongwaipu” Website: https://lovelywu.netlify.app/ This is the most awe-inspiring thing today. The students dug up the World War II naval special attack base in Houlong Waipu that was almost forgotten by the world. From the Japanese army’s forcible conquest of more than 300 hectares of farmland in 1944 and the construction of a runway with laterite gravel, to the introduction of the Marugame-shaped air raid trenches, egg roll-shaped bunkers, and the remains of the machine gun fort at the foot of the mountain, and then all the way to the forced closing of the seaside windows of Sealine trains during the martial law period, and the return of eight Japanese veterans in 2002 to their old place in Shuiwei to observe a moment of silence. A complete historical timeline, location of the ruins, and even a collection form for local people to provide clues to historical materials. This is already a standard for a local cultural and historical job, and it was actually done in one morning.

“People of the Wind and Sea: Daokas Xingang Society Cultural Micro-Webpage” Website: https://heartinhoulong.netlify.app/ This article illustrates the Pingpu culture of the Daokas Xingang community in Houlong Xinminli in a beautiful and dignified way. The three large flags that are more than ten meters high, the rush weaving handmade by women, the acacia stones on the intertidal zone that adapt to the tides, and the revitalization in 2002 of the cultural renaissance that interrupted the festival for nearly half a century. The root of the place was gently caught by a student using a web page.

Help local industries and workers create decent brands

“Hou Long Qing Cheng Hao Peanut” Website: https://mellow-sunshine-64c9e5.netlify.app/ The time-honored souvenir shop that has been making fried potatoes in Houlong since 1976 has been turned into a complete brand official website. Sun exposure, slow cooking in a large pot, and the insistence of three hand-selected craftsmen, the salty, sweet and crispy flavors of salty crisp, Chinese herbal medicine, and honey flavor are compared. Finally, an interactive quiz is made to help you choose the flavor. Answer two questions to recommend which one is suitable for you.

“Houlong Huangcaiqin Zuoxiang Natural Handmade Soap” Website: https://jimh.netlify.app/ Aunt Caiqin’s cold-processed soap, which she researched to protect her family from chemical irritation, was turned into a brand story page with all ingredients disclosed, 45 days of cold-aging and five processes, and four customer testimonials. From harvesting in the early morning, freshly squeezing into juice, to molding and keeping warm, every step is explained clearly. A piece of soap has its own life experience.

Take people to visit the mountains and seas of Houlong

“The Perfect Guide to One-Day Tour to Miaoli Houlong Cape of Good Hope” URL: https://harmonious-quokka-73d4c5.netlify.app/ From the Gongtian Temple in Baishatun, the ancient Caicai Road, and the giant Mazu stone sculptures in Qinghai Palace, to the old cross-harbour tunnel, the Shepherd Trail and the Cape of Good Hope to watch the sunset, local snacks, accommodation, driving and train connections are all planned. What surprised me most is that it also has a built-in smart tour guide chatbot that can directly ask about directions and food.

“Miaoli Houlong Cape Paradise” Website: https://houlong.netlify.app/ A cape paradise restored from a landfill into a secret seaside paradise has been written into a moving love letter to the coast: a giant rainbow arch, a summer-only sea of chrysanthemums, a green light sea breeze bicycle path, and intertidal ecology after low tide. Even the best viewing time and tide reminders are thoughtfully included.

“Beishi River Water Corridor: Houlong’s Four Seasons Ecological and Humanistic Journey” URL: https://darling-crumble-273bbb.netlify.app/ The 2.6-kilometer waterfront corridor based on the Cheonggyecheon Stream in South Korea is divided into four different swimming methods in spring, summer, autumn and winter. The black swans, Cole ducks and mandarin ducks in the corridor are also introduced in detail. Even the moving lines of the Hakka round building, Yingcai academy and landscape waterwheel are strung together into a complete route.

Speak up for your communities and centers

“Dancing in Dazhuang, accompanied by health” Dazhuang community square dance promotion Website: https://dancing-mommy.netlify.app/ The square dance held every Wednesday and Thursday night at the Dazhuangli Activity Center has been turned into a vibrant promotion page, complete with entry honors, event time, and registration instructions. The daily life of the community can also have its own official website.

The official websites of three digital opportunity centers, Houlong, Sanwan and Tongxiao, were also born today:

They can even make games.

Who said that you can only make static web pages with zero foundation? Today, two students directly challenged the interactive game and were actually able to play it:

“Tom and Jerry: Ultimate Showdown” URL: https://cat-mouse.netlify.app/ Use the keyboard to control the little mouse to eat cheese and hide from the cat. There are also three props and difficulty options: catnip, pepper, and shield.

“Speed City Adventure: National Racing Challenge” URL: https://glittery-quokka-b6391a.netlify.app/ An arcade racing game with three modes: easy, medium, and challenge, as well as leaderboards.

There are also people who also made their hometowns from other places.

“Puzi Xun Food Map” Food Guide of Puzi City, Chiayi County Website: https://puzifood.netlify.app/ One student was still not satisfied and even made a copy of another place he cared about: handmade mochi from Puzi No. 1 Market, century-old angelica duck, and the Wenqing Cafe renovated from an old medical clinic, checking out every detail along the way. Once you learn a tool, there is more than one place you want to keep it.

In one morning, we covered the literature and history of World War II, aboriginal culture, local brands, eco-tourism, community activities, and interactive games. Such breadth and completion are the work of a group of Houlong folks who said they didn’t know how to do it this morning. This is not a miracle, this is the right method.

What I want to tell you most

Being able to do this in four hours does not depend on talent, but on guidance.

Over the years, I have seen too many people get stuck, not because they are stupid or because the AI is too difficult, but because no one told them in the critical steps: where to click in the first step, what words to use to communicate with the AI when they are stuck, and where to adjust the ugly thing. This hurdle may be stuck for three months if one person is trying to figure it out; if someone takes the lead, it can be passed in one morning.

Today, the folks from Houlong personally proved this. The good stories about your hometown, the good products on your hands, and the website you’ve been wanting to do for a long time but didn’t dare to start, all deserve to be seen by the world. And what you need is never programming skills, just someone to accompany you through the first time.

If you want to start, I have paved two roads for you.
