See the situation, plan the situation, and break the situation: "Thinking about breaking the situation" teaches you how to no longer be influenced by the situation.
I was chatting with a young friend a while ago, and he said that he felt trapped - there was no breakthrough in his job, his income was stagnant, and he wanted to change careers but didn’t know the direction. He asked me: “Teacher Vista, how did you transform from traditional media to what you are now?”
This question reminds me of a book I read recently - “Thinking Beyond the Game”. The three-stage thinking of “seeing the situation, laying out the situation, and breaking the situation” mentioned in the book can exactly answer this question.
What is game-breaking thinking?
In this era of rapid change, many people feel a sense of powerlessness: they work hard, but they feel like they are standing still; they see opportunities passing by, but they don’t know how to seize them; they want to change the status quo, but they don’t know where to start.
“Thinking outside the game” tells us: the problem is not that you don’t work hard enough, but that you don’t see the “game” clearly.
The dilemma of most people is not lack of ability, but that they cannot see clearly what situation they are in.
The author breaks down “breaking the situation” into three levels:
1. See the game - see clearly the chessboard you are on
Many people work hard every day but never look up to see what kind of situation they are in. Is your industry in a period of growth or decline? Who are your competitors? How are the rules of the market changing?
To see the game is to jump out of the chessboard and look at the chessboard. You can’t just be a chess piece that keeps moving forward. You have to learn to see the entire chess game clearly from the operator’s perspective.
2. Layout—positioning at key positions
After seeing the situation clearly, the next step is to proactively plan. This is not about shooting at random, but about strategically placing chess pieces in key positions.
When masters play chess, they don’t make one move and count one move, but they move one move and think three moves.
Layout requires patience. Sometimes a seemingly insignificant action may become your greatest advantage three years later. The book mentions that the “critical step” for many successful people is often to start preparing before others see the trend.
3. Break the situation - find a breakthrough
With an overall view and a layout, the final step is to find the breakthrough and break the deadlock in one fell swoop. To break the situation is not to act recklessly, but to exert force at the most vulnerable place and at the most leveraged point.
My breaking experience: from magazine editor to diverse creator
As I read this book, I kept thinking about my own experiences.
More than ten years ago, I was the editor-in-chief of Digital Times magazine. It was the golden age of print media, but I already had a vague feeling that this “game” was changing. The rise of social media, the shift in reading habits, and the flow of advertising budgets to digital platforms… These signals tell me: If you just stick to your current position, you will be eliminated sooner or later.
At that time, I started doing things that seemed “not my real job”: running a blog, researching content marketing, and learning digital tools. These seemed like just interests at the time, but looking back, that was exactly my “layout.”
Later, he left the magazine and transformed into an independent consultant, training instructor, and columnist. This road has not been easy, but because of the previous layout, I have the foundation of personal brand, professional knowledge that can be monetized, and a group of readers who are willing to support me.
Breaking a situation is not about waiting until you are cornered, but taking the initiative to find a way out before the situation worsens.
Looking back now, I was able to successfully transform, not because I was smarter than others, but because I “saw the situation” earlier and started “layout” earlier.
🚀 Want to use AI to break down technical barriers and quickly realize your ideas?
The key to breaking through a situation often lies in finding new tools and new methods. Vibe Coding allows you to describe your requirements in natural language, and AI generates code for you - you don’t need a programming background to turn ideas in your mind into operational products.
This is not just about learning technology, but learning to use the tools of the new era to break the old limitations.
Several points that make me think deeply
In the process of reading this book, there are several points that made me think over and over again:
Those who are influenced by the situation can only be used as pawns; only those who can manipulate the situation have the opportunity to change the rules.
This sentence made me rethink the meaning of “initiative”. Many people complain about bad circumstances, bad timing, and bad luck. But the real question is: are you waiting for opportunities, or are you creating them?
I deeply understand this in the process of running One Person Company. When you are no longer attached to a certain organization or platform, you must learn to operate on your own. It’s hard work, but it’s also very freeing.
The best time to break the situation is not when you are forced into a desperate situation, but when you still have options.
This reminds me of many stories of midlife transformation. Why do some people make successful transitions while others fail to recover? The difference is often that successful people “take the initiative to seek change” and losers are “forced to seek change.” The former was prepared and had a layout; the latter was caught off guard and had no leverage.
Who is this book suitable for?
According to my reading experience, the following types of readers will particularly benefit:
- Office workers who feel stuck in their careers: Want to find a breakthrough, but don’t know the direction?
- Mid-aged workers who are considering transition: need a systematic thinking framework
- Entrepreneurs and Freelance Workers: Want to see the market clearly and find their positioning
- Those interested in strategic thinking: Want to improve their overall perspective
- People who are facing major decisions: need a method of analysis and action
How to start your journey to break the game?
After reading this book, I compiled a few actions that I can start immediately:
Step 1: Draw your game
Take out a piece of paper and write down the “game” you are currently in: What are the trends in your industry? What is your competitive advantage? What is changing? What opportunities are emerging?
Step 2: Count your pieces
What resources do you have at your disposal? Professional skills, personal network, financial capabilities, time and energy… these are all chess pieces you can use.
Step 3: Find your breaking point
Based on the situation and resources, find a breakthrough point to start from. It doesn’t need to be big, but it needs to be specific and feasible. Just like when I started blogging, that was my first breaking point.
My recommendation reasons
There are two main reasons why I recommend “Thinking Beyond the Game”:
First, it provides an operational framework for thinking. It is not an empty chicken soup for the soul, but a practical tool that can be used to analyze problems and formulate strategies.
Second, it responds to the anxieties of this era. In the context of AI waves, economic turmoil, and workplace changes, everyone needs to learn the ability to “break the situation.” This book gives us a starting point.
As the book says:
In this era, the biggest risk is not change, but stability.
Write at the end
Thinking outside the box is not a talent, but an ability that can be learned.
See the situation clearly, take the initiative to plan, and find a breakthrough—these three steps sound simple, but in practice they require continuous practice and reflection. But once you start, you’re already ahead of most people.
If you are looking for your own breakthrough, or feel trapped in a deadlock, I really recommend you read this book. It may not solve your problem immediately, but it will give you a new perspective and allow you to see possibilities that you would otherwise not see.
